Good luck finding
somebody who's more involved with music than Amy
Logan. She directs choir at Skyview High and is
ar-tistic director and conductor of the Rimrock
Opera Chorus for Kids. She has performed as a
clarinetist with the Billings Symphony Orchestra and
as a vocal soloist for the Billings Studio Theatre
and Rimrock Opera. In April, she'll star as Mimi,
the leading role in "La Boheme," presented by
Rimrock Opera Co. She provides private voice and
instrument lessons and also raises a family.
Anybody who has spent much time around Billings
schools knows that teachers appreciate the efforts
of music teachers, who handle so many kids. The
Rimrock Chorus for Kids has proven to be a great way
to encourage more youngsters to get involved
interested in vocal music.
"It's a lot of
work for these kids," Logan said. "They have to want
to be there, and they have to love what they're
doing."
Like most musicians, Logan is
constantly looking for ways to improve as a director
and a performer.
Describe how you got where
you are in your work today. I have worked as an
elementary general music teacher, a middle school
choir director, and then to the high school level.
In addition, I founded a choral program through the
Rimrock Opera. The program has grown from one small
choir to three choirs (grades 1-12), over 85
members, and a staff of five directors and
accompanists.
What's the toughest challenge
that you have faced in your business? To
constantly grow as a director and teacher. I want to
continue to find ways to teach and inspire the young
musicians I get to work with, and help them discover
the lifelong joys of music.
What did you
learn from that challenge?
I must never stop
learning! I try to find as many opportunities as I
can to grow in my knowledge and inspiration. Through
workshops, classes, observation and studying I try
to find as many ideas and techniques to help me grow
as a teacher.
If you could make one positive
change in Billings, what would it be? I wish I
could help the people of Billings see the importance
of our educational system. If we could all work
together for the good of our future, the children,
it would be less about money and politics, and more
likely that we'd find solutions to truly benefit our
children.
Which living person do you most
admire?
I greatly admire Russ Newbury, the
man with whom I student-taught. He is not only a
phenomenal musician, director and teacher, he is an
inspirational man with deep morals and values. I
will always strive to become the teacher I see him
to be.
What do you consider your greatest
achievement?
Though I find achievements (many
small, some big) in the classroom and on stage with
my choirs, my greatest accomplish-ment is in the
area of my own performance career. Amidst a
full-time choir teaching job, a weekend choir
program, a private music studio, a family, and
numerous other responsibilities, I have had some
great personal performance achievements. I have
enjoyed the chance to perform as a clarinetist in
the Billings Symphony and as a vocal soloist for the
Symphony, the Messiah, BST and Rimrock Opera. In
April, I will sing the leading role in the Rimrock
Opera production of "La Boheme" as Mimi.
